Trenchless sewer work renews, replaces or installs pipe from a few access points instead of a continuous trench. The answers below cover what each family of methods does, which methods suit houses, mains and crossings, where grade and connections limit them, what they disturb, and what they cost in 2026 planning terms, with links to the guides that go deeper.

- Local rules vary; confirm ownership, permits and locates with your municipality and province.

01 /What does this trenchless FAQ cover?
Questions owners, property managers and curious readers ask about the whole trenchless field, not one method. For a single cracked joint on a house lateral, the repair decision is covered on TrenchlessSewerRepair.ca; for bursting in depth, see PipeBursting.ca; and for liner engineering, SewerRelining.ca. Start with what trenchless means if the word is new.
Answers that cite a figure name its source: ASTM standard scopes, the Iowa SUDAS design manual, the US EPA, CCOHS, or the municipal site where we verified it in September 2026. Where the honest answer is "it depends", the answer says on what. Terms are defined in the glossary.
FAQAll questions
What is trenchless sewer technology in one sentence?
It is any way of renewing, replacing or installing a buried pipe from access points such as cleanouts, pits or shafts, without digging a trench along the whole route.
What are the three families of trenchless methods?
Renewal (lining and coatings that keep the old pipe as a host), replacement on the old path (bursting, splitting, reaming), and new-path installation (directional drilling, boring, ramming, microtunnelling, moling).
Does every trenchless method follow the old pipe's grade?
Renewal and most replacement methods do, so sags remain. New-path methods set their own grade, to the accuracy of the machine; pipe eating can adjust grade on larger sewers.
Which trenchless methods can make a pipe bigger?
Bursting, splitting and reaming can install the same size or larger. SUDAS reports upsizing of up to three pipe diameters or more with bursting.
How much bore does a CIPP liner take up?
A liner's wall thickness, which depends on its design. The bore ends slightly smaller but smooth and jointless.
Why is slip lining rarely used on house laterals?
A smaller pipe inside a 100 mm lateral costs a lot of capacity, and every service connection needs a dig. It suits larger mains and culverts better.
Can a gravity sewer be installed by directional drilling?
Only with generous fall. SUDAS says HDD can be difficult at small slopes and may not suit gravity pipelines; typical accuracy is about ±1% of bore length.
Which new-path method holds grade best?
Laser-guided microtunnelling and pipe jacking; SUDAS says installations within about one inch of line and grade are possible.
What is a casing, and why do crossings need one?
A steel sleeve bored or rammed under a road or railway. The carrier pipe sits inside on chocks, protected from loads and replaceable without disturbing the crossing.
Are epoxy coatings a structural repair?
Most are not. ASTM F2831 describes a non-structural epoxy barrier coating for metallic pressure piping; it relies on the pipe for strength.
How many holes will a trenchless job dig on my lot?
From none, when lining from a cleanout, to two plus one per branch connection for bursting or slip lining. The Disruption Calculator counts them for your run.
Will a locate service mark my private sewer lateral?
Usually not. In Alberta, Utility Safety Partners says customer-owned sewer and water services are not registered with it; a private locator traces them with a sonde.
How far ahead do I request locates in Alberta?
At least three full working days before any ground disturbance, according to Utility Safety Partners.
At what depth does a pit need shoring?
CCOHS guidance calls for a protective system at 1.2 m (4 ft) or deeper unless the excavation is entirely in stable rock. Provincial rules apply.
What does the smell during sewer relining mean?
Usually styrene from the resin as it cures. Toronto Public Health says it is detectable far below harmful levels and breaks down within a day or two; fill drain traps with water.
What service life is expected from a CIPP liner?
SUDAS says the expected service life is generally accepted to be 50 years, and Toronto's watermain lining specification targets a 50-year design life.
What does trenchless relining of a house lateral cost?
About $9,000 to $28,000 CAD for a 15 to 25 m lateral as a 2026 planning estimate, and $2,500 to $6,500 for a single sectional liner.
What does bursting a house lateral cost?
About $10,000 to $30,000 CAD for 15 to 25 m as a 2026 planning estimate, with each extra pit adding $1,500 to $6,000.
Is there a price range for directional drilling a new line?
Not on this site. Residential drilling is usually part of a service replacement quote, and larger work is tendered.
Who pays when the problem is under the street?
It depends on the city. EPCOR owns Edmonton laterals from the property line to the main, while Winnipeg owners own theirs to the main. Ask your municipality.
Does trenchless work still need a permit and inspection?
Most municipalities require a permit and inspection for sewer and water service work, whatever the method. Confirm who applies before work starts.
Can trenchless work be done in a Canadian winter?
Yes, in most cases. The underground work runs below the frost; the pits need thawing or frost protection, which adds time and cost, and lining crews manage resin temperature carefully in the cold.
What should the final video after trenchless work show?
The full length with distances, a smooth continuous pipe or liner, open and sealed connections, finished ends and no obstructions. Keep it with the invoice.
